Best Movies of 2020 – Best of the Genres

Continuing my look at the best movies of 2020 these are my picks for the best movies from each genre.  This will categories such as Best Animated Film, Best Action Film, and Biggest Surprise.

 

 

 

WOLFWALKERS (Apple Inc./GKids)

BEST ANIMATED FILM

– Though Soul has the making of a new Pixar classic, Wolfwalkers’ gorgeous 2D animation mixed with its beautiful and cultural story blew me away.

 

ANOTHER ROUND (Nordisk Film)

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

  3. BACURAU 
  4. THERE IS NO EVIL
  5. UNDINE

– In a year of great foreign films, it was Thomas Vinterberg’s smart, expertly acted mid-life crises dramedy that stood head-and-shoulders above the rest.

 

PALM SPRINGS (Neon/Hulu)

BEST COMEDY

Palm Springs mixed time travel and the romantic comedy to give us an imaginative, genre-changer led by two stellar performances from Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti,

 

TENET (Warner Bros.)

BEST ACTION FILM

  3. BAD BOYS FOR LIFE
  4. GREENLAND
  5. BIRDS OF PREY

– 2020 was a relatively slow year for action films, but Christopher Nolan’s globe-trotting, time-shifting spy epic was an action spectacle at the highest level.

THE DARK AND THE WICKED (RLJE Films)

BEST HORROR/THRILLER

  3. THE INVISIBLE MAN
  4. POSSESSOR
  5. RELIC

– The best film of director Bryan Bertino’s career is a horrifying look at a family loss and trauma.

AMERICAN UTOPIA (HBO/Universal)

BEST DOCUMENTARY

  1. DAVID BYRNE’S AMERICAN UTOPIA
  2. TIME
  3. THE TRUFFLE HUNTERS
  4. DICK JOHNSON IS DEAD
  5. BOYS STATE

– 2020 was an incredible year for documentaries and the best of the bunch was Spike Lee’s concert movie David Byrne’s American Utopia, an entertaining, stunning film that captures life, love, passion, and creativity.

 

FREAKY (Blumhouse)

BIGGEST SURPRISE

  1. FREAKY
  2. THE DARK AND THE WICKED
  3. BAD BOYS FOR LIFE
  4. THE WAY BACK
  5. GREENLAND

– I don’t know what my expectations were for Freaky, but the film exceeded all of them and then some.  Freaky is equal parts bloody horror and hilarious body-swap comedy and both are perfectly meshed together.

– Carie Coon gives one of the best performances of 2020 in Sean Durkin’s domestic drama about a family crumbling after they move from New York to England.
